Do any owners still have the original autopilot on their boats.
I have the original Pinta and whilst it is still working I was wondering if anyone knows if anyone repairs them?

Yes, still have the old pinta. It does still work after a fashion, but has been occasionally known to unexpectedly change course without warning, so I don't rely on it. I have been unable to trace anyone who can provide any information on Pinta Autopilots. If anyone else can shed any light such as circuit diagrams, instructions or specifications it would be appreciated.

Retired, live on Mersea Island with my wife Stephanie. Owned Sula Two since 2005. Originally kept her in Portsmouth harbour then Ipswich, and since we moved here in 2007 she has been on moorings at West Mersea. Mainly cruise east coast. Have done the usual repairs and updating since 2005 which will probably continue for the forseeable future.

Barry,

Fortunately ours works perfectly but I do hope to get a complete set of diagrams/instructions from another non Barbary owner that I have come across.

Below is a letter from PINTA PILOTS to the previous owner of our Barbary in 1998 (just 12 years ago) but I have googled the address and they are not there anymore.

Barry,

Please look at the "Various Manuals" section. I have placed a Pinta service manual there. Don't know if it is the same as on the Barbary though. Chances are that they didn't have loads of types or, if they did, they would be similar.

Thanks for this information. I have read through it all and it appears to be for the same unit as fitted to Sula Two. Will check further when I next visit her. The 1998 letter you have sent describes the occasional problems I experience with my unit, so I will follow the recommendations when time permits and let you know.

I have a Cetrek Auto Pilot fitted to mine , so sorry can't help. I do remember the Pinta Pilots where quite good , so probably worth getting it serviced, if you can find somewhere.

Glad to be of help. If you are correct, my boat being 1974, could have the same model.

It would be interesting to know what autopilots other owners have successfully installed in last few years as a replacement in case the Pinta goes totally wrong.

Hi All, Barbary Rose had an old Raymarine wheel pilot that took minutes to go from lock to lock - useless unless in flat calm under motor. I fitted a Raymarine S1G Smart pilot (with the rate gyro) and St6001 control unit driving their Type 1 rotary drive that chain drives to the back of the Morse rack steering fitting at the helm. It works brilliantly and can cope comfortably in steep rolling seas even running running down wind. We tend to use it most of the time. If anyone wants more details give me a call.

Owner, with Jane Robinson, of 1972 Barbary Ketch, Barbary Rose. Keep her at Brightlingsea, in Essex. - Former names were "Gay Constance II" !!! and "Mere Idea"
